Overview
The MSBA has established several sustainable programs for MSBA-funded projects, with an increased emphasis on reducing energy consumption and improving indoor air quality. These programs include updated standards for new and major renovation/addition projects within the Core Program. The MSBA also covers the cost for required building commissioning for MSBA-funded projects to ensure that these buildings operate efficiently and as designed.
For additional information regarding MSBA-funded schools that have been designed for all-electric and/or are including geothermal technology, please follow the links within.
The MSBA’s Green Schools Program provides incentives to districts with projects invited into the Core Program to increase the energy efficiency and sustainability for new construction and major renovation/addition projects, by meeting the “Specialized energy code” and for exceeding MSBA minimum standards for indoor air quality.
MSBA’s Green Schools Program aims to encourage a high standard of sustainability for MSBA-funded projects. The MSBA continues to monitor the effectiveness of its policies and make recommendations for improvement, with an emphasis on energy and cost savings, resulting in potential operational savings for school districts. The most recent update to MSBA’s Green Schools Program policy was approved at the MSBA’s Board of Directors Meeting on April 29, 2026.
